ADVERTISING PORTFOLIO
AP 1. Advertising manager and/or graphic artist should submit three
examples of work published in a campus publication during the contest period.
The tearsheets submitted may be stapled together, and an entry form affixed to
the back. Mark each ad to be judged on the tearsheets with red or blue
outline. Camera-ready copy and art should be included for possible subsequent
publication.

NEWSPAPER CATEGORIES (PRINT)
Newspaper Entry Procedures
1. An entry form must be completed for each submission. Fasten the form to the
back of the full tearsheet with tape or staples. In writing, graphic and photo
categories, outline the entry in red or blue ink.
2. If appropriate, attach a statement of no more than 100 words explaining
unusual circumstances under which an entry was published. For example, you may
want to put a news story in context, describe action that resulted from it, or
detail difficulties encountered in gathering information. All attachments must
be typed (in a word processor), printed and stapled to the entry, and must
include the signature of the person responsible for submitting the entry.
NP 1. Overall Excellence: Send two sets of complete issues published on or
nearest the dates of April 12, October 11 and December 6. Staple or tape the
entry form to the back of each set. Entries will be judged in two publication
frequency divisions:
NP1a, weekly and less often, and
NP1b, more often than weekly.
NP 2. News Stories (excluding Sports)
NP 3. Editorials (staff eds)
NP 4. Spot or Hard News
NP 5. News Series
NP 6. Continuing Coverage
NP 7. Personal Opinion
NP 8. Features (including stories and columns: excluding Sports)
NP 9. Sports News
NP 10. Sports Features
NP 11. Sports Columns
NP 12. News Photography: Photos must have been taken and published in the
competition year. Submit a tearsheet plus a print: film, laser or inkjet.
NP 13. Feature Photography: Photos must have been taken and published in the
competition year. Submit a tearsheet plus a print: film, laser or inkjet.
NP 14. Sports Photography: Photos must have been taken and published in the
competition year. Submit a tearsheet plus a print: film, laser or inkjet.
NP 15. Cartoon Strips and Panels: Must have been originally published in the
competition year. Submit a tearsheet.
NP 16. Editorial Cartoon, originally published in the competition year. Submit
a tearsheet.
NP 17. Graphic Illustrations, originally published in the competition year.
Submit a tearsheet.

NP 18. Front Page Layout: Fold and tape or staple to completed entry form.
NP 19. Photo Essay: Can be news, feature or sports with at least three photos.
NP 20. Editorial Page: Both design and content are judged.
NP 21. Sports Page: Both design and content are judged.
NP 22. Inside Page Design: hard news

MAGAZINE CATEGORIES
Magazine Entry Procedures
1. All (but no more than four) consecutive issues published during the
competition year may be submitted.
2. Affix an entry form inside the front cover of each magazine.
3. If appropriate, include a statement of no more than 250 words about the
circumstances under which the magazine was edited and produced.
4. Contest category must be indicated on entry form.
MAG 1. Overall Excellence: All magazine types may be entered. Submit two
copies of each, up to four.
MAG 2. Literary: If participation warrants.
MAG 3. Special interest. If participation warrants.
MAG 4. General interest. If participation warrants.
MAG 5. Individual Magazine Writing. Submit tearsheets with entry form affixed.

BROADCASTING CATEGORIES
Broadcast Entry Procedures
1. Submit no more than one category on the same tape or disc.
2. Submit radio entries on standard cassette tape or compact disc.
3. Submit video entries on standard VHS cassette tape or DVD.
4. Record VHS format entries on SP speed.
5. Radio and television entries must be no longer than 30 minutes.
6. Entry form stickers must include information necessary to identify the tape.
Stickers should be attached to boxes as well as the tapes or discs.
7. Each TV broadcast entry should have a video slate preceding the
production/entry. Entries should include name of college, title of entry, names
of producers, station’s call letters and contest category.
8. Black-and-white entries are accepted, and will be judged along with color
entries.
9. A cover letter explaining the purpose or objective of the broadcast and the
date the entry was aired may be included with any entry.

TV 4. Commercial, Promotion and Public Announcement: Entries should be no
longer than 60 seconds.
Radio

Yearbook Entry Procedures
1. Submit two copies of your 2008-2009 book. Single entries will be disqualified. Do
not submit tearsheets; entries will be judged in all categories
2. Affix an entry form inside the front cover of each book submitted.
3. The entry may, if appropriate, include a statement of no more than 250 words
concerning the circumstances in which the book was edited and produced.
YB 1. Coverage of the Year: 12 months on campus: The Terry Vander Heyden

YB 2. Concept of the Book: theme, idea, structure
YB 3. Reporting in Words: copy, reportorial writing
YB 4. Photography
YB 5. Display: layout, design, graphics

YB6a, small schools–enrollment less than 7,000
